I was 9 years old in 1943. We were sort of a Roosevelt family... my mother loved both Eleanor and Franklin Delano, however,  my father wasn't so sure about FDR. But, we all really did admire cousin Teddy. Teddy’s exploits out West and his adventures in Yellowstone Park were the bases for many a dime store novel, which fed, of course, a young boy’s imagination. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of the outings to the Roosevelt Oyster Bay summer home, Sagamore Hill.

The first picture shows Sagamore Hill. The second is Mount Rushmore. The third is a view of the Badlands of North Dakota at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The last four photos show Teddy on his porch; Teddy and John Muir, the founders of the Conservation Movement, in Yosemite Park; the Rough Riders, and a portrait of Teddy with the world globe in his office.

                        Bully!

                        Kind Heart in Peace yet brave at War,
                        From Hill San Juan to Sagamore;
                        Republican's Ambassador,
                        Long Island’s Roos’velt, Theodore;
                        This 'Open Space' Conservator,
                        On Rushmore's Face forever more!

                        Grand, presidential Maverick,
                        Rough rode the Body Politic,
                        Through Trouble thin and Rabble thick;
                        Tough Man of Will; Mind varied, quick,
                        Preserved the Land, used ev'ry Trick;
                        Spoke softly, still, he carried Stick!
