Study Of A Harris's Sparrow, Brandywine SP, DE, October 17th, 2008
An adult, non-breeding
Harris's Sparrow (Zonotrichia querula) has been seen for the past couple
of weeks at the Brandywine
Creek State Park on
Adams Dam Road in Wilmington, Delaware. We went early this
morning and spread fresh bird seed at the altar of the sparrows near the entrance
of the park. Within minutes, the Harris's Sparrow, a midwestern bird and the
largest of our sparrows, kindly arrived and posed for us. There
were several other
species of sparrows there also enjoying the feast, e.g. Lincoln's, Savannah,
White-crowned, White-throated and Song. We
stayed for about an hour and by the
time we left to go to Bombay Hook NWR, there were at least seven or eight
more birders remaining to get
great looks at the bird.
