Photo Study Of A Henslow's Sparrow

The Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) is an uncommon and famously inconspicuous bird. It breeds in the weedy grasslands of east-central United States. Its population numbers have declined steadily over the past few decades, primarily because of habitat loss.

Kevin Fryberger and Brian Byrnes found this neat bird on private land on January 4th in southeastern Pennsylvania (Brandywine country.) The landowner has asked that the exact location not be disclosed so that the bird would be left unharassed. The Henslow's shouldn't be here this time of year and both the finders and the landowner were concerned for its safety. I  truly appreciate being allowed to photograph this beautiful, little sparrow today and, as well, that I was permitted to share some of the images with the List.

Henslow's Sparrow

The Henslow's Sparrow is about five inches long with a wingspan of about six and a half inches. It is dark overall, relatively large headed, with a white eyering, thick bill and a short tail.
