Photo Study Of A Hooded Crow On Long Beach Island (Ocean County, NJ), August 12th, 2011
Mike
DeBonis and I were able to get to Long Beach Island this morning to see and
photograph the reported Hooded Crow. The Hooded Crow
(Corvus cornix) is
a Eurasian bird species in the crow genus. Widely distributed, it is found
across Northern, Eastern and Southeastern Europe
as well as parts of the Middle East. It is an ashy gray bird with black head,
throat, wings, tail and thigh feathers, as well as a black bill, eyes and
feet.
Like other corvids it is an omnivorous opportunistic forager and feeder. Who really knows if this
Hooded Crow was boat-assisted or not;
or
if it was perhaps caged and then released or not; or even if it
flew all the way across the Atlantic Ocean all
by itself? I will
leave the provenance of
this particular bird to the Review
Committee and
the experts. BTW,
if accepted by the Committee, this will be the first sighting of this species
in
North America. The bird
was first reported on Staten Island sometime in June and it's probably been
on Long Beach
Island
for several weeks. In
any event, the Hooded
Crow was very cooperative this morning,
giving many of us some great views as well as lots of photo opportunities on the
porches, rooftops, poles and wires of Merivale, Leeward
and other adjacent Beach Haven streets.
