Photo Study Of Lapland Longspurs At Oberly Road WMA in Alpha, NJ
There were at least two adult non-breeding male Lapland Longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus) among the hundreds of Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris) at Oberly Road WMA in Alpha, NJ today. The Longspur is a medium sized (6.5 inches), sparrow-like, common songbird of the tundra. It breeds across Arctic Europe, Asia and North America. It is migratory, wintering in the Russian steppes, southern Canada and the United States and the northern Scandinavian arctic areas down to coastal southern Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain. This is the only Eurasian species of longspur buntings and while it probably did not evolve there, it has been present in Eastern Europe for at least 30,000 years. (Wikpedia)
