Little Egret And Other Birds At Bombay Hook
Someone
reported a Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) at
Bombay Hook NWR in Smyrna, DE on June 7th. Several of us went to try and
see the bird yesterday. When we arrived
at 9:00 AM, we found it at the
north end of Shearness Pool where it stayed for about a half hour. It then flew
over to Bear Swamp Pool where it remained for another hour.
It then flew out
towards the tidal area. We weren't able to find it again before we had to leave.
Hopefully, this rare visitor will hang around for the summer. It looks very
much
like the Snowy Egret but the Little Egret is slightly larger with gray lores,
yellow-orange feet and a breeding plume. Unfortunately,
we were never able to get closer than 150
yards to where it was feeding in the
marsh grasses.
I've updated this page with another photo of the Little Egret taken yesterday and added pictures of some other birds that were also hanging out at Bombay Hook.
Please click on either the captions or the thumbnails to see a larger image...thanks!
