We visited Switzerland in the summer of 1995. The lovely Alpine village of Zermatt is at 5275 feet above sea level. We took the crowded Cog Railway Train up to the Inn at Gornergrat (10288 feet). Of course, we had a delightful lunch of bratwurst, black bread and beer. The Matterhorn (14776 feet) soared above us into a cloudless sky.
We were indeed on top of the world!
Three weeks later, we first learned of Swiss duplicity in helping the Nazis transport train after train loaded with Jews destined for Hitler’s gas chambers and ovens. The Swiss actually took a bounty for each Jew passing through their borders. Swiss banks had solicited and harbored Jewish deposits and then quietly confiscated the funds knowing full well that the owners would perish in the death camps. The Swiss Government and the banks were both willing and active participants. The Red Cross, the Catholic Church and the Diplomatic Corps were, at the very least, enablers of this tragic slaughter.
We were totally disillusioned!

                                   Swiss Alps

                      Cog Railway Trains leave Zermatt’s Floor,
                      From Valley low to Heaven’s Door;
                      Brave Men rappel and find Rapport,
                      Then hike or ski, a happy Chore,
                      To play atop this awesome Tor;
                      Climb Matterhorn, superior!

                      ‘Round Pinnacles, bold Winds aroar,
                      Coat crusty Crags, cold Rime or Hoar;
                      Flow Glaciers o’er, Lime Rocks explore,
                      Though melting Snow, green Pines restore,
                      White Alpine Peaks e’er upwards soar;
                      Blue skyward bound, excelsior!

                      Oh, greedy Swiss, just used the War,
                      Duplicities, we must deplore;
                      This so-called Neutral; seedy Whore,
                      Transfused Blood Money, keeping Score;
                      Bruised, needy Jews, did all ignore,
                      Red Cross or Diplomatic Corps;
                      Moralities, inferior!
